Ever wonder what makes certain sheep wild, hardier, or able to survive without as much human support? For decades farmers and fiber artists have been on a mission to preserve heritage breeds for their unique characteristics, fiber quality, and hardiness.
Mother and daughter shepherds Amy and Iris Gillingham have raised multiple heritage breeds over the years. Amy of Wild Roots Farm began raising Icelandic sheep just after they were first introduced into the United States over 30 years ago. She added Shetland sheep to her flock over a decade ago. At 9 years old, Iris won a Scottish Blackface ewe as part of a 4-H program to preserve heritage breeds. in 2022 Iris started Gael Roots Community Farm down the road and purchased registered Icelandic ewes. This will be an introduction to heritage breeds with special focus on Icelandic and Shetland breeds, with a deeper dive into the unique qualities of these breeds for home and market.
