Paid Internship for High School Students
Position Overview:
Gael Roots, a community-based farm in Livingston Manor, is looking for motivated and passionate high school students to join our Farm Internship Program for summer 2025. This opportunity is ideal for students who are interested in agriculture, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Through hands-on learning experiences, interns will gain valuable skills in farming, animal husbandry, food production, and sustainability, all while contributing to a positive change in the Livingston Manor community.
Internship Details:
Students: High School Students from Livingston Manor/Roscoe School District
Location: Gael Roots Community Farm, Livingston Manor, NY
Compensation: $18.00 per hour
Duration: 8 hours per week over the course of 7 weeks (with a potential break the first two weeks of August)
Schedule: : Monday and Tuesday mornings roughly 4 hours each day starting June 30th
What the internship may include:
Farm Work: Assist with planting, weeding, harvesting, and maintaining crops in the garden; farm organization, including setting up the vegetable farmstand; care for animals, including sheep and cows.
Hands-On Learning: Participate in agriculture practices, including rotational grazing animals, soil health management, and building out farm infrastructure.
Community Workshops: Assist with planning and leading community workshops and activities around farming, food sovereignty, and environmental stewardship.
Educational Outreach: Support Gael Roots’ efforts to engage local youth and adults in hands-on learning, including farm tours, storytelling, and conversations on agriculture, food systems, and ecology of the Catskill Mountains.
Skills Development: Learn key farming techniques and life skills, from plant ID to soil and field management, and cooking seasonally with harvested produce.
Qualifications:
High school student from Livingston Manor/Roscoe High Schools
Interest in agriculture, environmental science, or food systems
Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to do physical labor
Enthusiasm for community involvement and educational outreach
Interest in hands-on learning in a farm setting
Flexibility and openness to working in various weather conditions
